Venom Sequel Delays Release to 2021, Gets Official Title

Sony is pushing back the Venom sequel release from fall 2020 to summer 2021. The studio also announced the movie's official title: Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The movie had been set to hit theaters Oct. 2, 2020. It will now go out on June 25, 2021, the date formerly occupied by Warner Bros.' Batman reboot.

Venom 2 is the latest high-profile tentpole to see its release date changed because of production delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic. There also is a backlog of product to release because of massive theater closures.

Sony announced its most recent calendar change 24 hours after Warner Bros. pushed back Matt Reeves' The Batman from June 25, 2021, to Oct. 1, 2021.

Andy Serkis is directing Venom 2, which sees Tom Hardy reprise his role as the titular character. In 2018, Venom turned into a sleeper hit at the global box office on its way to earning $856 million.

Kelly Marcel wrote the script for Venom 2. Woody Harrelson joins the emerging franchise as the villain Carnage after a last-minute cameo in the first installment.
